Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
