Seven accused members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
