Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
